Anti-wrinkle injections

People have always wanted to look good and feel good, so with the stress of modern life it’s probably no surprise to hear the skin care market has grown rapidly in recent years to an estimated $100 billion worldwide.

While creams, lotions and serums have been the traditional products in this field, people are increasingly turning to injectable options that promise even better results, especially when it comes to anti-aging. Below we’ve looked to answer a few frequently asked questions about anti-wrinkle injections in XXXXXX.

How do anti-wrinkle injections work?

To understand how anti-wrinkle injections work, it helps to examine what causes wrinkles in the first place.

Wrinkles are caused by a combination of three main factors:

  • Age – Your skin naturally becomes less elastic with age, produces less natural oils, and loses fat in the deeper layers, all of which can contribute to the formation of wrinkles. It’s important to note that smoking can accelerate this natural progression and more rapidly age the skin.
  • UV exposure – Exposure to UV light breaks down the skin's connective tissue (mostly collagen and elastin), which causes it to lose strength and flexibility.
  • Fatigue – Squinting, smiling, frowning and the repeated use of other facial muscles can lead to skin fatigue that creates fine lines and wrinkles.

To put it evenly more simply, wrinkles are caused by the inability of the skin to smooth itself out after movement due to aging, UV damage and fatigue. Anti-wrinkle injections work by targeting the muscles that are responsible for this movement to make them relax more and reduce the depth of the lines created.

What’s the difference between anti-wrinkle injections and dermal fillers?

When most people hear anti-wrinkle injections, they often tend to mix it up with another popular anti-aging treatment – dermal fillers.

Both treatments aim to reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles in the skin, however, they do so with slightly different goals in mind. As mentioned, anti-wrinkle injections target the source of the wrinkle by relaxing the muscle responsible; in contrast, dermal fillers seek to conceal the symptoms of this movement and are injected into the skin itself to “fill” the visible lines.

This subtle difference also means these treatments are used in slightly different areas of the face. For anti-wrinkle injections, the common sites are the forehead/frown lines, crow’s feet and eyebrow region. Dermal fillers, on the other hand, are more suitable for the chin, cheeks, lips and nasolabial areas.

How long do anti-wrinkle injections work for?

The effects of anti-wrinkle injections are typically felt 14 days after they’re administered and usually last 3 to 4 months, however that can extend out to 12 months in some cases.

This timeframe is ultimately determined by the area being treated and how your skin reacts to treatment. Like any product, the quality of the result is also dependent on how well you care for it. Good practices like staying hydrated, wearing sunscreen, and not smoking will help you get the most out of your anti-wrinkle treatment.

Another consideration that can come into play for effectiveness of anti-wrinkle injections is the number of treatment cycles that have been completed. In rare cases, people who have undergone many treatments have reported a resistance to the effects of the injections.

Where can anti-wrinkle injections be used?

Anti-wrinkle injections can be used to soften existing wrinkles and prevent the emergence of further wrinkles in the following areas of the face:

  • Forehead
  • Crow’s feet
  • Bunny lines (wrinkles on either side of the nose)

Plus, give a more youthful or aesthetically pleasing look to these areas:

  • Upper lip – Commonly known as “lip flip”, which looks to create a fuller, more shapely appearance.
  • Smile – Typically for reducing the amount of gum exposed (known as “gummy smile”).
  • Eyebrow – For a fuller, plumper look to the eyebrow region.
  • Chin – Reducing the noticeable dimpling of the chin during mouth movements.
  • Jaw – relaxing and reducing the apparent size of jaw muscles (known as “jaw slimming”).

How much do anti-wrinkle injections cost?

The biggest factor in determining the cost of anti-wrinkle injections is how many units are administered, with the number heavily influenced by the area being treated.

For example, areas that have stronger muscles and/or deeper wrinkles will require more injections and therefore typically cost more. With this in mind, anti-wrinkle injections for men will generally cost more given they usually have stronger muscles than women.
